@X083@X05.@X0838@X03 PICRIC ACID
@X08 Picric acid@X05,@X08 also known as Tri@X05-@X08Nitro@X05-@X08Phenol@X05,@X08 or T@X05.@X08N@X05.@X08P@X05.@X08@X05,@X08 is a military
explosive that is most often used as a booster charge to set off another less
sensitive explosive@X05,@X08 such as T@X05.@X08N@X05.@X08T@X05.@X08 It another explosive that is fairly simple
to make@X05,@X08 assuming that one can acquire the concentrated sulfuric and nitric
acids@X05.@X08 Its procedure for manufacture is given in many college chemistry lab
manuals@X05,@X08 and is easy to follow@X05.@X08 The main problem with picric acid is its
tendency to form dangerously sensitive and unstable picrate salts@X05,@X08 such as
potassium picrate@X05.@X08 For this reason@X05,@X08 it is usually made into a safer form@X05,@X08 such
as ammonium picrate@X05,@X08 also called explosive D@X05.@X08 A social deviant would probably
use a formula similar to the one presented here to make picric acid@X05.@X08
MATERIALS EQUIPMENT
@X05_________ _________
@X08phenol @X05(@X089@X05.@X085 g@X05)@X08 500 ml flask
concentrated adjustable heat source
sulfuric acid @X05(@X0812@X05.@X085 ml@X05)@X08
1000 ml beaker
concentrated nitric or other container
acid @X05(@X0838 ml@X05)@X08 suitable for boiling in
distilled water filter paper
and funnel
glass stirring rod
1@X05)@X08 Place 9@X05.@X085 grams of phenol into the 500 ml flask@X05,@X08 and carefully add 12@X05.@X085
ml of concentrated sulfuric acid and stir the mixture@X05.@X08
2@X05)@X08 Put 400 ml of tap water into the 1000 ml beaker or boiling container and
bring the water to a gentle boil@X05.@X08
3@X05)@X08 After warming the 500 ml flask under hot tap water@X05,@X08 place it in the boiling
water@X05,@X08 and continue to stir the mixture of phenol and acid for about thirty
minutes@X05.@X08 After thirty minutes@X05,@X08 take the flask out@X05,@X08 and allow it to cool for
about five minutes@X05.@X08
4@X05)@X08 Pour out the boiling water used above@X05,@X08 and after allowing the container to
cool@X05,@X08 use it to create an ice bath@X05,@X08 similar to the one used in section 3@X05.@X0813@X05,@X08
steps 3@X05-@X084@X05.@X08 Place the 500 ml flask with the mixed acid an phenol in the ice
bath@X05.@X08 Add 38 ml of concentrated nitric acid in small amounts@X05,@X08 stirring the
mixture constantly@X05.@X08 A vigorous but @X05@X05"@X08@X08harmless@X05"@X08 reaction should occur@X05.@X08 When
the mixture stops reacting vigorously@X05,@X08 take the flask out of the ice bath@X05.@X08
5@X05)@X08 Warm the ice bath container@X05,@X08 if it is glass@X05,@X08 and then begin boiling more tap
water@X05.@X08 Place the flask containing the mixture in the boiling water@X05,@X08 and heat
it in the boiling water for 1@X05.@X085 to 2 hours@X05.@X08
6@X05)@X08 Add 100 ml of cold distilled water to the solution@X05,@X08 and chill it in an ice
bath until it is cold@X05.@X08
7@X05)@X08 Filter out the yellowish@X05-@X08white picric acid crystals by pouring the solution
through the filter paper in the funnel@X05.@X08 Collect the liquid and dispose of it
in a safe place@X05,@X08 since it is corrosive@X05.@X08
8@X05)@X08 Wash out the 500 ml flask with distilled water@X05,@X08 and put the contents of the
filter paper in the flask@X05.@X08 Add 300 ml of water@X05,@X08 and shake vigorously@X05.@X08
9@X05)@X08 Re@X05-@X08filter the crystals@X05,@X08 and allow them to dry@X05.@X08
10@X05)@X08 Store the crystals in a safe place in a glass container@X05,@X08 since they will
react with metal containers to produce picrates that could explode
spontaneously@X05.@X08
